A Journey Through Time
Bolsena is a charming town located in the upper part of the city, which still retains its original medieval appearance. The medieval district of Bolsena, nestled on the tuff cliff on which a small Etruscan center emerged in the 6th century B.C., is full of surprises and places to stop to enjoy a traditional dish, buy local products, and savor a coffee immersed in the history of this delightful town.
What to See in the Historic Center
The historic center of Bolsena, known as Castrum Capitis at the time, is laid out along the two central and parallel streets, Medici and Adami, and the lower village, once protected by an additional city wall with numerous towers, some of which are still visible today. Opposite the Rocca, the church of SS. Salvatore stands, characterized by a bell tower covered by a semi-circular dome with polychrome tiles.
The Museums of Bolsena
The Rocca houses the Territorial Museum of Lake Bolsena, which includes an important archaeological section and an aquarium. A new archaeological section and a collection of medieval and Renaissance ceramics have been set up in the nearby Palazzo Monaldeschi.
History
Bolsena was repeatedly ruled by the Guelph family of the Monaldeschi between the 11th and 14th centuries. The family resided in the two palaces they owned: one near the castle and the other in the lower village. The rule of the Monaldeschi in Bolsena ended in 1451 with the death of Count Corrado, who had no heirs. The city then returned under the direct control of the Church.
