Seggiano is a small hilltop village located at the foot of Mount Amiata in the province of Grosseto. What to See in Seggiano
One of the most important attractions in Seggiano is the “Olivo nel Cisternone” (Olive in the Cistern), a true scientific installation that represents the first example of Olivastra Seggianese, as well as the largest plant in the world nourished through aeroponic technology. The plant’s roots remain suspended inside the former cistern of the village and are nourished through the vaporization of water and nutrients. Seggiano also offers a route through the Olive Oil Museum, a “scattered museum” that winds its way through the village. Among the many offerings, a visit to the ancient olive press and the olive oil tasting room is certainly worthwhile. The village tour continues in front of the neo-Gothic Town Hall, where the parish church dedicated to San Bartolomeo stands out. Further up, you’ll find the Church of Corpus Domini, also dedicated to San Bernardino da Siena.
History of Seggiano
Seggiano is a medieval village, and its name is derived from the presence of cork oak trees, or “suvero,” in the region. Its economy has traditionally been based on agriculture, forestry, and livestock farming, but today, tourism plays an increasingly important role.
Typical Products
Seggiano is famous for its production of extra virgin olive oil Seggiano DOP, obtained from Olivastra Seggianese olives. This oil is green with golden yellow hues and a fresh fruity aroma. The fragrance of this oil is especially delightful on salads, legumes, dishes seasoned with vegetables, and game dishes.
How to Get to Seggiano
Seggiano is located in the Tuscan hinterland, not far from the border with the province of Siena. It takes just over 2 hours to reach Seggiano from Florence. You can take the FI-PI-LI major communication road to the Vicarello exit, then enter A12 until the Rosignano toll booth, and finally continue along the SS1 Aurelia national road heading south to Venturina. From there, you can reach your destination in just over 10 minutes. For those traveling by public transportation, you can reach Seggiano with a transfer at the Campiglia Marittima train station in Venturina Terme. Regional trains to and from Florence, Pisa, Grosseto, and Rome Termini stop here. Bus number 3 departs from this station and takes you directly to Seggiano in 20 minutes.
