Suvereto is a charming medieval village located in the heart of Val di Cornia, in the province of Livorno. This small town, still surrounded by walls, is situated on the gentle slopes that rise from the Cornia River valley towards the Colline Metallifere. From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Gulf of Follonica, and the Island of Elba. The Suvereto area is rich in cork oaks, centuries-old olive trees, and vines, reflecting the characteristics of the local economy, traditionally based on agriculture, forestry, and livestock.
What to See in Suvereto
The small historic village of Suvereto is rich in interesting monuments and attractions. The Town Hall, one of the most significant examples of medieval civil architecture in the Livornese Maremma, is topped by an ancient tower, now housing the clock, which was once one of the lookout points of the small center.
The Church of San Giusto Vescovo, with very ancient origins, is another place of interest. Inside the building, you can admire an octagonal stone baptismal font dating back to the 12th century, and a pipe organ dated 1718 made by Domenico Francesco Mazzoni.
The Church of San Michele Arcangelo, now home to the Museum of Sacred Art, houses works from the local parish and artistic heritage, including two splendid wooden statues from the 15th century attributed to Lorenzo di Pietro, known as Il Vecchietta.
On the top of one of the two hills on which the Suvereto castle extends, stands what remains of the ancient convent of San Francesco, with an adjoining convent church. The convent was founded in 1286 on land donated by the counts Aldobrandeschi of S. Fiora.
History of Suvereto
Suvereto is a medieval village whose name derives from “suvero,” the Italian word for cork, which is abundant in the surrounding area and is depicted in the municipal coat of arms. Its economy has traditionally been based on agriculture, forestry, and livestock, but today, tourism plays an increasingly important role.
How to Get to Suvereto
Suvereto is located in the Livorno hinterland, not far from the border with the Grosseto province. It takes a little over 2 hours to travel from Florence, following the major road FI-PI-LI until the Vicarello exit, then entering A12 until the Rosignano toll booth, and finally continuing along the SS1 Aurelia state road southward to Venturina. From there, it’s just over a 10-minute drive to reach Suvereto.
For those traveling by public transportation, Suvereto can be reached with a transfer at the Campiglia Marittima train station in Venturina Terme, where regional trains from and to Florence, Pisa, Grosseto, and Rome Termini stop. Bus number 3 departs from here and reaches the Suvereto terminus in just 20 minutes.
