Discover Castiglione della Pescaia in Maremma

Castiglione della Pescaia is a charming seaside village located on a promontory on the Maremma coast. Its Aragonese castle, walls, towers, and the splendid panorama make this place stunningly beautiful. Castiglione della Pescaia is also a renowned tourist destination, appreciated for the quality of its environment and the sea. Its beaches, both free and equipped, sandy or rocky, can satisfy even the most demanding tourists.

What to See in Castiglione della Pescaia

The lower part of the town is the most recent, where commercial activities are concentrated. The part of the village enclosed within the walls is the oldest. By crossing Porta Urbica, you can stroll through the narrow streets that climb towards the top of the promontory, immersing yourself in an ancient atmosphere among walls, archer posts, and ancient gates. Continuing, you reach the castle, from which you can appreciate the magnificent panorama of the Tuscan Archipelago. Inside the walls, you can also find Palazzo Centurioni, probably the oldest monumental building in the village, and the small church of Santa Maria del Giglio.

Casa Rossa Ximenes

Casa Rossa Ximenes, located in Castiglione della Pescaia, is a historic building constructed by the Jesuit engineer Leonardo Ximenes between 1765 and 1768. This structure was built to drain the Castiglione della Pescaia marsh, providing control and water support during low water periods, essential for fishing activities. Today, both inside and outside Casa Rossa Ximenes, you can find technological structures such as sluices, barriers, and various gears, which are still functional even though they are no longer used.

Today, Casa Rossa houses the Interactive Museum created by Mizar, an agency for scientific dissemination, designed by the renowned physicist Paco Lanciano. The educational path unfolds on two floors of the Casa Museo: an original documentary about Diaccia Botrona, integrated with a three-dimensional projection on the map related to this area, illustrates how the current environment is the result of natural evolution and human interventions throughout history. In the second part of the journey, visitors can engage in birdwatching from the panoramic terrace. Casa Rossa Ximenes also offers birdwatching activities, cultural events, educational activities for student groups of all levels, workshops, environmental education, walking and mountain biking excursions, horseback riding, music and theater events, book presentations, local product tastings, informative and cultural meetings.
