THE TUSCAN MAREMMA PRODUCES WINES OF GREAT THINGS THANKS TO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ITS LAND: FAVORABLE CLIMATE, CLOSE TO THE SEA, THE MOUNTAINS AND THE HILLS, WITH WINTERS THAT ARE NOT TOO COLD AND SUMMERS NEVER TOO HOT.
The Maremma (and the Tuscany region in general) is unanimously recognized as a land of great wines, in the area you can find reds, whites, sweet wines, rosés, vinsantos and bubbles. The first winemakers and consumers of the Maremma were the ancient Etruscans, and later the Romans, who continued the tradition started by their illustrious predecessors. The Maremma vines are today the authentic pivots on which the economy and food and wine tourism of the area revolve (also known as the term wine tourism). In the Tuscan Maremma, wines such as Sangiovese (red, here called Morellino), white Trebbiano, Sicilian Ansonica, Greco and Verdello of Umbrian origin and even Alicante, brought by the Aragonese in the 17th century, prevail. The Livorno Maremma, along the Etruscan Coast, has 5 DOCs: Terratico di Bibbona, Montescudaio, Bolgheri (home of Sassicaia and Ornellaia), Val di Cornia, Elba Island.
The Grosseto Maremma includes 1 DOCG: Morellino di Scansano – 7 DOC: Rosso di Sovana, Bianco di Pitigliano, Costa Ansonica dell’Argentario, Capalbio, Parrina di Orbetello, Monteregio di Massa Marittima and Montecucco – 2 IGT: Maremma Toscana and the Toscano o Tuscany. The Maremma Laziale also offers great wines, even if the white vines prevail – Trebbiano, Malvasia, Bellone, Bombino, Verdicchio – flanked by red Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Cesanese, which give life to the extensive DOC Colli Etruschi Viterbesi, the DOC Trquinia and the DOC Cerveteri.
