Scansano is an ancient village nestled in the Maremma hills. With medieval origins, it is famous throughout the world for its wine: Morellino di Scansano.
What to see in Scansano
The historic center of the town is very characteristic, you can enter it starting from Piazza Garibaldi and crossing a large door of sixteenth-century origin, among the streets you can appreciate numerous buildings of medieval origin, among the most important Palazzo Vaccarecci, the church of San Giovanni Battista , the Praetorian Palace, the ancient pilgrims’ hospital, the Castagnoli theater (recently renovated). The ancient city walls are still recognizable on the buildings of the historic center and in some sections can be explored on foot, from here it is possible to admire the panorama of the surrounding hills.
One of the main attractions of the village of Scansano is the Archaeological and Vine and Wine Museum which is located inside the Palazzo Pretorio in the square of the same name.
The museum and Ghiaccio Forte
The museum was inaugurated in 2011 and offers an overview of the history of human presence in ancient times in the Albegna valley, also collecting finds from the Etruscan settlement of Ghiaccio Forte. This settlement is located about 12 km from Scansano, founded in the 4th century BC. it was destroyed by the Romans in 280 BC. when they conquered the city of Vulci. The ancient city developed on two hills, one hill hosted the cult area, the other an area used as a metallurgical area, and in the central part there was the town surrounded by walls. This archaeological area is freely accessible.
The Museum of Vine and Wine is aimed not only at providing information on the wines produced in the area but also at promoting the culture and traditions of the area, having this product as its common thread. The museum itinerary is divided into different areas: historical, production, the “vine and wine cycle”, traditions, information.
Other places of interest to visit in Scansano and its surroundings are the village in Pereta, the Montorgiali Castle, the villa of Montepò.
Morellino di Scansano
Morellino di Scansano deserves a special mention, the main product of this area which has made the town famous throughout the world. Morellino achieved the recognition of the Controlled Designation of Origin in 1978, and in 2006 the Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin. Product to be regulated with 85% Sangiovese (Morellino) grapes and the remaining part from non-aromatic black grape varieties, it geographically occupies the hilly area of the province of Grosseto between the Ombrone and Albegna rivers. In this area there are dozens and dozens of wineries, many of which can be visited, available for tastings and purchasing wines. Local wines together with washinga can also be appreciated in the numerous wine shops and restaurants found in the historic city center. In September the Wine Festival takes place in Scansano, a popular festival during which the cellars are opened and local wines can be tasted.
