What to See in Magliano in Tuscany
The historic center, of medieval origin, is enclosed by the walls and delimited to the south by Porta San Giovanni and to the north by Porta di San Martino. From the latter, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside. At the heart of the village stand the 13th-century Palazzo of Checco il Bello, enriched by a Gothic facade and family emblems, and the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, dating back to the Roman period. Inside the latter, you can admire Sienese school frescoes and the baptismal font from 1439.
A walk along the walls’ walkway, among the best-preserved in all of Tuscany, offers a unique perspective on the village and the surrounding landscape. Outside the walls of Magliano, you can admire one of Tuscany’s monumental trees: the Olive of the Witch, so named because, according to tradition, it is located where, in medieval times, women accused of witchcraft secretly gathered.
Magliano is nestled in the heart of the Grosseto Maremma and is an excellent starting point to explore the natural beauty of the Maremma Natural Park. In the surroundings, you’ll find some small churches of remarkable austerity, such as that of San Giovanni Battista and the Pieve of San Martino. Dating back to the same period are the two splendid fortified villages of Montiano and Pereta, characterized by small houses tightly packed together, often joined by supporting arches.

In addition to its historical and artistic heritage, Magliano has become famous for the significant development of viticulture related to the production of wine, the famous D.O.C.G. Morellino di Scansano. This unique product represents the taste and typical flavors of Maremma and is ideal for pairing with Maremman cuisine dishes such as acquacotta, wild boar scottiglia, and drunken pork.

To reach Magliano in Tuscany, you can take the A1 highway to the Chiusi-Chianciano Terme exit, then follow the signs for SS2 Cassia towards Abbadia San Salvatore and finally follow the directions to Magliano. If you’re traveling by train, the nearest station is Grosseto, from where you can take a bus to Magliano.
